Band History The Calvert County Fire & EMS Pipes and Drum band was formed in April 2009 by Piper Mike Bowen (Prince Frederick VFD, Co 2.). Mike put out an "all hands on deck" email inviting volunteers throughout the county to create the first Pipe and Drum band in the Calvert County's History. A handful of people came to the first meeting held at Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, Co 2. Today, the current band members come from different Volunteer Departments and Professional agencies throughout the region. Our modest beginnings currently have us at 5 pipers and 5 drummers, some with experience and others with none. When the band was formed, word got out quick. We have been invited by other Pipe bands to participate in Parades and Ceremonies throughout the region for 2010. Our Goal is to perform in the Maryland State Fireman's Convention Parade in 2010 at Ocean City, MD. We have had the honor of receiving instruction from a great Pipe Master - Hal Cummings (USNA '71). From 1962 until 1965, Hal studied Piping with Sandy Jones, who became Pipe Major of the Air Force Pipe Band. During that time Hal played with several groups that Sandy sponsored, and did solo work, and piping for Highland Dancing performances. In addition, Hal took music and voice lessons from members of the Navy Band. In 1966, Hal studied and played pipes with the Edinburgh Academy pipers, and piped for Highland Dancing in various places in Scotland.
In addition to playing the Pipes
for Weddings, Funerals, Parties and other events in the
Washington D.C./Baltimore area and playing with a number of
Irish bands, Hal gives private Bagpipe lessons at his home
in Arnold MD, is the Instructor for the Prince Georges
County Police Pipe Band, and Plays as a soloist and band
ensemble member with the
Chesapeake Caledonian Pipes and Drums.
